What's Wireless network?

With increasing use of wireless (also known as “Wi-Fi”, “Wi-Bro” or “Wi-Max”) networks in the home, office and most public areas, we can surf and access all sorts of information anytime and anywhere. Using our laptop, PDAs or even our handphones, we are now able to check the bus schedule and reserve movie tickets whenever and wherever we want.

As we embrace the new conveniences provided by these wireless networks, we have to be aware of newer dangers that are associated with surfing wirelessly.

What are some of the dangers when connected to wireless networks?

A danger of using wireless is the possibility of losing personal and sensitive data to someone who is spying on the wireless network. Sniffing, or reading information flowing across the network can occur if the information is not protected before it is sent.

Another common way through which personal information is gathered is through the setting up of unauthorised or rogue Access Points (AP). An AP is a wireless entrance to the Internet. Unsuspecting wireless users may connect to the unauthorised AP and send their information to these people with malicious intent.
